New screening arrangements for international students in Australia

Under screening arrangements connected with the new simplified student visa in Australia all prospective international students must prove to be genuine.

A pre-visa screening assessment is usually conducted by the International Admissions department of the university in Australia and education providers are required to ensure that all applications are from students who meet genuine temporary entrant requirements.

Under the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP)'s Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF), overseas students must have the financial capacity to support their study in Australia.

The university requires each international applicant to submit a detailed personal statement of study purpose with their application and they must provide documentary evidence of financial capacity.

Students must have genuine access to either sufficient funds to cover themselves and any accompanying family members for their first 12 months in Australia or sufficient ongoing income to cover these costs. Students may also be asked to provide further documentation and/or speak with a university representative for a quick interview.

'If the university forms the opinion that you did not pass the pre-visa screening, it may refuse to assess your application, withdraw an offer of a place or cancel your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE),' said a Department of Immigration spokesman.

The rules also mean that universities do not generally accept applications from students who have been refused a student visa within the previous two years. Any students found submitting fake information such as documents, work experience, and financial claims will be banned from applying for a visa in Australia for a three year period.

Australia's simplified student visa framework came into effect at the beginning of July and is designed to make the process of applying for a student visa simpler.

Industrial action

Department of Immigration and Border Protection employees, who are members of the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU), will take part in protected industrial action at various work sites around Australia starting from 11 August 2016.

The CPSU has given notice of work stoppages at all Department of Immigration and Border Protection work areas, in all states, including international airports, client service centres, ports, container examination facilities and international mail facilities.

We have contingency arrangements in place to minimise the impact of stoppages on business operations.

The health, safety and security of the public and our staff continues to be our priority during protected industrial action.

While we are working closely with stakeholders to minimise the impact on the travelling public and on cargo and mail operations, and is ensuring appropriate measures are in place for visa and citizenship services, we strongly encourage passengers booked on international flights get to the airport early.

New Multi-Million Dollar Deal Set to Boost Visitors to Australia

Australia gains in tourism

Tourism Australia and Qantas airlines have agreed on a new $20-million deal to promote Australia to the world, with the aim of attracting more international visitors, especially from the United States, Asia, the U.K. and Europe.

The three-year agreement involves a joint investment and will have an emphasis on digital marketing. Tourism Australia and the national airline carrier will invest in joint campaigns supported through public relations, social media and trade activities. It will also include an anonymised data sharing arrangement to better reach customers who are considering travelling to Australia.

Qantas Group chief executive officer Alan Joyce said its multi-million dollar investment with Tourism Australia was about continuing the momentum of the tourism boom to deliver bigger benefits for Australia.

'Both Qantas and Tourism Australia want the same thing: a strong tourism industry that makes Australia the first choice for people all over the world,' he explained.
