Tourism & Transport Forum defends WHV system

Unemployment Graph

Far from taking jobs from young Australians, working holiday makers add to demand in our economy, creating business and employment opportunities across Australia, according to peak national industry group, Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

TTF Chief Executive Ken Morrison said working holiday makers are a very valuable group of visitors.

"We would also like to see the scheme extended to countries Australia is targeting with our tourism marketing, like China and India, giving young people from those countries the opportunity to get to know Australia intimately and form those valuable, lasting relationships that are so beneficial to our economy.

"We know these negotiations take time so we would like the federal government to put these countries on the agenda in the near future," Mr Morrison said.

Australian population to double by 2075

The Australian Bureau of Statistics yesterday released predictions for coming decades - based on fertility, life expectancy and migration.

"Melbourne and Sydney should be neck and neck by 2053, with 7.9 million people each," head of demography at the ABS, Bjorn Jarvis, said.

The head count in Perth will total three million by 2028, when it will overtake Brisbane.

In 2038 the ACT's population will climb higher than Tasmania. Growth is expected to continue in all states and territories except Tasmania, where the population is expected to plateau by 2040.

The full text of the information from the ABS is available here.

Immigration swoops on Perth visa overstayers

Arrangements are being made for the removal of 17 visa overstayers detained in a series of immigration compliance operations in Perth.

Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash said this served as a warning that visa overstayers and illegal workers would be detained and removed from Australia as quickly as possible

"Australia will not tolerate people ignoring their immigration obligations or employers using illegal workers," she said.

The 17 people were located in three separate locations north of Perth.

Overseas migrants climb property ladder

The number of overseas migrants moving to Australia has shot up by 20 per cent over the last two years, bolstering the domestic property market.

Population growth is a key driver of the property market as it underpins demand for real estate, and migrants requiring rental properties on first arrival to Australia are expected to drive demand higher when they buy their own homes and investment properties.

ABS population figures for the March 2013 quarter reveal that net overseas migration to Australia topped 73,398 people during the March 2013 quarter. This compared to 60,970 people during the March 2011 quarter, representing an increase of 20 per cent over the last two years.

Overseas migrants account for over 60 per cent of total population growth in Australia during the quarter.

The June figures will be available next month. For the full breakdown of the figures from the ABS, please see here.

Changes to Queensland State Sponsorship Announced

New changes to Queensland state sponsorship has been announced by the state government.

Queensland's state sponsored skilled occupation list (QSOL) has been updated. The state government has added 28 to the occupation list and removed 4 from it. This is considered as good news for prospective migrants planning to come to Australia and proves that Queensland is still well and truly open for business.

Other changes to the QSOL are reductions of the IELTS requirement for all occupations to 6 and required work experience to only 2 years. Those changes assist applicants with meeting the requirements for Queensland state sponsorship under the subclass 190 visa.

The Queensland government usually processes requests for Queensland nomination for skilled visas within two weeks once a complete application has been received. This demonstrates Queensland's aim to be the fastest state to process such visas.

These updated changes have come in to force from November 1, 2013.
