Why should you be cautious before choosing a migration agent?

After being accused of ripping off hundreds of foreign students over contracts for 457 and other work visas and making a death threat against a client a Sydney business man earned an ambiguous reputation.

The CEO of Singapore Oil, Eddie Kang, charges students up to $45,000 for providing a job placement and a work visa. But a Lateline investigation has found that many of his clients get no job, no visa, and no full refund afterwards.

A foreign student from Bangladesh has told Lateline he paid $15,000 for a visa to work as a cook at another of Mr Kang's businesses in Sydney. When he showed up at the address on his contract, the restaurant no longer existed.

Karl Konrad, a former police officer who now runs the migration agency Australian Immigration Law Services, estimates that Mr Kang’s victims could number in the hundreds.

New Laws Make Moving To Australia Tougher

Why do you increasingly need an expert to help you migrating toward Australia?

New laws in Australia have made things tougher for skilled Brits wanting to work Down Under. The Australian government has clamped down on the popular 457 visa which allows foreign workers to move to the country for up to four years.

Mr O'Sullivan is a bricklayer who came to Australia for work. He was detained last February after immigration authorities discovered his visa problems during a routine check.

"It was my life. I thought this was it. I have been here since I was 22. My family were due out to visit me. I have never been home. I'm going to try and get to Canada because there is nothing for me now at home."

Coalition rules out end point of Nauru

IMMIGRATION Minister Scott Morrison has reportedly scuttled the former government's plans to settle asylum-seekers in Nauru permanently, telling a group of Nauruan MPs the Coalition will not leave refugees on the tiny island nation.

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection created SkillSelect, an online skilled migration system, to ensure that skilled migrants are allowed to live and work based on the economic needs of Australia. The program also aims to shorten the processing time for visa applications of skilled workers.

Qian applied for and got a job at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Canberra. She decided to use SkillSelect to process her work visa in Australia. Qian submitted her visa application in December 2012 and she was granted a subclass 189 visa the following month. SkillSelect gave her a score of 60 points due to her impressive list of achievements, including a Doctoral Degree in Science, Business and Technology in China at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Nauruan MP Mathew Batsiua said he met Mr Morrison last week after the Immigration Minister flew to the island to inspect the refugee processing centre and meet government and opposition MPs.

Mr Batsiua said MPs raised concerns about a provision in the memorandum of understanding negotiated with Labor that held open the possibility genuine refugees could remain permanently in Nauru after their claims had been processed.
