Immigration Levels Can Go Up – Labor Leadership Hopeful Bill Shorten

Labor leadership hopeful Bill Shorten said on Monday that immigration levels can go up in Australia. Mr Shorten, together with fellow contender Anthony Albanese, appeared in ABC TV's Q&A program to give an overview of their vision for the country.

Mr Shorten said Australia is an immigrant country since most of the citizens came to the country by air and sea. He stated, "There are a lot of refugee who might not only be the next Albert Einstein or a good taxpayer." He believed that immigration is advantageous to the country and added that the Labor party will make sure that there are sustainable infrastructure and available support to new immigrants. The Party is backing an increase of the Australian immigration rate to support the Australian economy growth.

Mr Shorten and Mr Albanese are hoping to convince about 40,000 Labor members who will cast their votes for their next leader on Thursday, October 10. The new Labor leader will be announced on October 13.

The state government announced the $4000 per year charge, to apply next year, in the 2013/14 budget. Today Premier Colin Barnett said the fee would apply from 2015 and only to first children. For subsequent children, the fees would be halved to $2000 per year, Mr Barnett said.

PM Abbott To Fight People-Smuggling

Tony AbbottAustralia

New Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott vowed on Monday to end the "scourge" of people-smuggling between Australia and Indonesia.

During a visit to Jakarta, Abbott discussed with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono about several immigration issues. Topping the issues during the leaders' meeting was the topic about asylum seekers. This, following the death of more than 50 asylum-seekers after their boat sank in Indonesian waters last week.

Abbott apologized and admitted that his latest policy on preventing boatpeople from reaching Australian shores might have gone too far. Meanwhile, the President said, "We realise, apart from the Bali process, we need another kind of co-operation at the bilateral level between Indonesia and Australia." He added that both countries had become victims of people smugglers and they must work together to fight the problem.

Abbott's trip opened the way for a deeper bilateral co-operation and the Prime Minister hoped that it will boost relationships between Asia-Pacific neighbors.

Man Charged with €20k Over Deportation Costs

The Australian government penalizes 28-year old Irishman Ross O'Sullivan with almost €20,000 for overstaying his visa for two and a half years. Mr. O'Sullivan is originally from Cork, and had stayed in Perth, Western Australia for five years before authorities from Australia's Department of Immigration and Citizenship discovered his felony.

Australian authorities are demanding Mr O'Sullivan compensation for the costs incurred for processing his visa and deportation, and he may be banned from entering the country for three years. Under the law, Mr O'Sullivan will have three escorts to travel with him back to Ireland. He will have to shoulder the payment for the escorts' flight fare, accommodation, and food. He said, "I had $1,300 (€900) and I said I voluntarily want to leave and book flights. But they said it doesn't work like that."

Mr O'Sullivan is a bricklayer who came to Australia for work. He was detained last February after immigration authorities discovered his visa problems during a routine check.

"It was my life. I thought this was it. I have been here since I was 22. My family were due out to visit me. I have never been home. I'm going to try and get to Canada because there is nothing for me now at home."
