City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder signs designated area migration agreement

The city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia is one of the first of many regions to enter into the five-year Designated Area Migration Agreement with the Australian Government. The purpose of this agreement is to give regional areas a much needed economic boost through supplying skilled migrants to areas where Australian workers are not available.

The agreement covers 73 occupations from industry areas such as health, construction, mining, engineering, and childcare. Over the five-year agreement up to 500 migrants per year will be eligible to be sponsored to move to the area. This is a big win for Western Australia and will help support that state's economic growth.

Skilled migrants at deportation risk when sponsor company collapses

Skilled migrants awaiting visa approval are at risk of deportation if their sponsored company shuts down whilst their visas are still being processed. Currently the Department of Home Affairs is taking up to two years to process permanent skilled sponsor visas. This puts skilled migrants in a vulnerable position as a lot can happen to a company in two years.

When a sponsor company does collapse, and a skilled migrant is only on a bridging visa, the migrant must hurry to start the whole sponsorship process again. This means the migrant must find a new sponsor company and reapply for the visa and restart the application – which adds on another two years. If the migrant cannot find a new sponsor company they will be deported. There has been a call for the Department of Home Affairs to improve processing times so skilled migrants seeking permanent residency are not unfairly exploited like this.

Greece added to the work and holiday visa program

Commencing from July 1st 2019 five hundred places will be available annually for young Greeks to visit Australia for up to twelve months. The aim of the work and holiday visa program is to provide regional areas and farmers access to more workers. It has also been estimated that working holiday visa holders inject approximately $3 billion into the Australian economy every year. With Greece added to this list, there are now 43 countries that participate in Australia’s work and holiday visa program.
