South Australia announces new changes to immigration

Last week, Immigration South Australia announced new changes to their general skilled migration nomination policies. All three changes offer greater opportunity for nomination. They are as follows:

  • International students that have been residing in South Australia continuously since at least March 2012 will receive an offer for state nomination for the Provisional 489 visa. To be eligible, migrants must be studying a course with a minimum duration of one academic year in South Australia; or working in South Australia in any occupation for at least the last 3 months with a minimum of 40 hours per fortnight.
  • High performing graduates with a grade point average between 5.2 - 5.99 will be allowed opportunity for the Provisional 489 visa pathway. As always, graduates with a grade point average above 6.0 will be provided with a pathway to the Permanent 190 visa.
  • Migrants who want to join their family members in South Australia, under the Chain Migration Policy, will no longer be required to hold a bachelor' degree.

These changes have been in effect since February 28, 2019.

Changes looming for AAT process

The Australian government is looking at overhauling the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. Last year migration and refugee challenges grew a massive 43 per cent. The government is planning to cut down on the bureaucracy of the AAT after growing frustrations of an inefficient system. Attorney-General Christian Porter has made a statement on the issue: "Having matters come back and back again after a ministerial decision with new issues being argued or evidence being put that was reasonably available at first instance seems to be creating a system that is both inefficient and outside community expectations of what is a fair and proper process."

The possible overhaul highlights the importance of submitting all available evidence on first application of your visa.

Increased immigration arrangements with Chile

Australia Chile

Immigration Minister David Coleman has announced that the annual visa places available to Chileans under the Work and Holiday Maker program will increase from 2,000 to 3,400. This will allow more young Chileans to explore Australia while they work. This partnership with Chile originally started in 2006 and has successfully strengthened links between the nations for the past 13 years.
