New plan to fast-track regional migrant visas

Immigration Minister David Coleman has announced a $19.4 million plan to fast-track regional migrant visas. This plan will see the Department of Home Affairs priority processing visas that are sponsored by employers in regional areas. Additionally, agreements will be made with local councils to allow for recruitment of overseas workers.

Coleman is hopeful the immigration plan will help out regional areas that need an economic boost. Regional Australia has been undergoing a shortage in skilled workers for some time and more and more businesses are looking to employee skilled migrants. Local businesses are expected to grow and develop under the plan as they receive the skilled workers they need.

Not-for-profit community organisations to receive funding to support migrants

220 community organisations have received a combined $9.3 million in funding under the Fostering Integration Grants program. The purpose of the program is to foster social and economic cohesion between migrants and Australian communities. Immigration Minister David Coleman states he is aware of the many challenges migrants can face when they first come to Australia and believes the program will ease the transition into Australian life through encouraging migrants to participate in the community. The organisations will also promote employment opportunities for migrants.

The business council of australia has recommended that there be no cuts to the immigration cap

Last year Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison vowed to cut the intake for permanent migration. Morrison stated that the current infrastructure in large cities would not be able to meet the demands of population growth. However, in a new report, the Business Council of Australia has recommended against cutting immigration. The Council has advised that immigration intake should stay at 190,000 with 128,550 places reserved for skilled migrants to help meet the labour market's demands.

With the majority of places reserved for skilled migrants, the Council anticipates strong economic growth. They also note that the Department of Home Affairs should consider ways to speed up the processing time for visas and reduce the cost of skilled visas. This will help Australia compete in the global labour market and attract the most talented migrants.
