Mid-year update to the Immigration South Australia occupation lists

Immigration South Australia has conducted a mid-year review of its occupation lists - the State Nominated Occupation List (SNOL) and the Supplementary Skilled List (SSL), with some limited changes as a result (Note: the lists undergo greater change at each new program year).

Changes will take effect on the afternoon of 11 February 2019. Four occupations have been changed to 489 provisional visa only for offshore applicants and this change is effective immediately.

Occupations added to the SNOL for the remainder of the 2018-19 program year:

Occupations on the SNOL with "Special conditions" status to be removed
(and therefore accessible to more offshore applicants).

Occupations on the SSL with the restriction on offshore applicants lifted
(i.e. High Points and Chain Migration pathways available again):

English level changes

Visa subclass availability (please note this change is effective immediately)

China is Australia's fastest growing and highest spending inbound tourism market, with 2.5 million Chinese tourists on tours per year.

Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs David Coleman said making it as easy as possible to facilitate travel between China and Australia was a critical factor to the ongoing success of the Approved Destination Status (ADS).

"Streamlined and quicker visa processing times are a major drawcard of the ADS and have been replicated in other parts of the visa system," Minister Coleman said.

In addition to the ADS, our government continues to improve the competitiveness of our visa system for Chinese visitors with the trialling of 10-year multiple entry visitor visas and online visa lodgements.

"Initiatives that make it easier for Chinese tourists to travel to Australia such as online visa lodgements and enabling lodgement applications in simplified Chinese will only further boost the attractiveness of Australia as a holiday destination."

Telstra boss calls for end to 'unhealthy' and 'potentially dangerous' immigration debate.

Mr Penn said software engineers, and people with know-how in data analytics and artificial intelligence, were among the key skills the telco was looking for, and urged the Federal Government to ease skilled migration restrictions.

He said the fact is we cannot find in Australia enough of the skills we need on the scale that we need them, particularly in software engineering.

He said Immigration was a "vexed issue" and attracted an enormous amount of political and media against. It's not just an issue in Australia.

Mr Penn said an ongoing skilled migration policy was essential not just for Telstra, but the country.

He said it is also important to remember that a well-targeted skilled migration policy is a job creator, not a job taker.

Skilled migrants bring ideas, they bring expertise and innovation, and they bring capacity to train and skill their Australian colleagues.

He said research by the IMF estimates that Australia's migration program would add up to 1 per cent average GDP growth from 2020 to 2050 because it focuses on skilled migrants of working age, which limits the economic impact of Australia's ageing population.

Meanwhile, Telstra is competing with other Australian corporates to get the talent it needs.

It is estimated that Australia will have a shortfall of 60,000 skilled workers in the ICT sector in the next five years alone. That means we are having to recruit some of those skills on the global market, including in places like India.
