Business and Skilled Migration Queensland Update to the Queensland Skilled Occupations List

The following information is posted on the Business and Skilled Migration Queensland website:

Please note that the following occupations:

  • ICT Business Analyst - 261111
  • Quantity Surveyor - 233213
  • Construction Project Manager - 133111
  • Marketing Specialist - 225113

will be removed from all the Queensland Skilled Occupation Lists (QSOLs) on 01 February 2019 as BSMQ has received many expressions of interest for these occupations and has filled the quota.

If you have not received an invitation by this date, BSMQ is no longer able to issue any new invitations.

BSMQ may open these occupations later if the current invitees do not respond in the required time frame. If this happens, information will be posted to this page.

Please also note:

  • Interior Designer - 232511
  • Actuary - 224111

will be removed from the offshore QSOL list but will be kept on the Working in Queensland onshore list.

Strong growth in Australian citizenship

The number of migrants becoming Australian citizens continues to rise, with an 83 per cent increase in citizenship applications finalised in the last six months of 2018 compared with the same period last year.

Between July and December 2018, almost 73,000 citizenship applications were finalised. This is compared to almost 40,000 during the same period in 2017.

"Australia Day is by far the most popular day to become a citizen and we are expecting more than 16,200 people to participate in ceremonies on Australia Day this year," Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs David Coleman said.

"This is an increase of more than 4,000 people compared with Australia Day in 2018, reflecting our commitment to ensure citizenship is at the forefront of our national celebrations.

This Australian state wants more skilled migrants

South Australia's Premier, Steven Marshall, has made a plea to the Prime Minister, calling for Australia's migration policy to allow for more skilled migrants across regional Australia.

He said states such as South Australia and Tasmania, as well as the Northern Territory, have vastly different needs to Sydney and Melbourne and he wants to see designated area migration agreements - DAMAs - expanded.

The Premier's plan also includes more incentives for international students, and encouraging local residents to stay and work - in a state where about 5,000 locals leave each year.

Chief Executive of South Australia's peak chamber of commerce, Business SA - said many employers across the state support the notion.

BSMQ to re-open Business Program for selected visa subclasses

BSMQ will issue business nomination invitations to selected visa subclasses on Friday 25 January 2019 until additional nomination quota has been filled. These visa subclasses include:

  • 132A Business Talent visa (Permanent) - Significant Business History stream (excluding applications with an intention to invest in residential property development businesses in Brisbane and Gold Coast)
  • 188B - Business Innovation and Investment visa (Provisional) - Investor Stream
  • 188C - Business Innovation and Investment visa (Provisional) - Significant Investor Stream.

BSMQ will start processing expressions of interest (EOIs) which were lodged after 2 January 2019 in the above visa categories and will consider reopening 188A - Business Innovation and Investment Visa (Provisional) - Innovation Stream on a case-by-case basis.

The following conditions apply:

  • BSMQ will not accept a second EOI from the same applicant for renomination within six months of the first nomination being issued.
  • BSMQ will no longer give a special endorsement for an age waiver from 25 January 2019 to 30 June 2019 if the applicant is over 55.
  • BSMQ will only consider issuing invitations to applicants who have selected 'Queensland only' as their chosen state
