Agriculture is expected to reach 100 billion AUD in value by 2030. However, this promising industry is going through a hard time due to the labour shortage.
If you want to come to Australia and work in agriculture, here are some visas you can consider applying for:
Students visa
This Australian visa allows students to stay in the country for the duration of their chosen course. This Australian visa also allows holders to get in and go out of Australia multiple times. Students who bring dependent family members to Australia usually stay the same length of time as the students. However, the dependents cannot stay in once the student has left.
How it works
Before you apply for a student visa, you must first apply for the school of your choice and you must have the necessary paperwork ready. Most of the time, show money will be required by the consul because they need to know that you will be able to support yourself while you are studying.
When calculating the cost you will need to show the consul, you need to factor in the cost of your course, the cost of insurance (this is a must!) cost of daily living expenses, etc. If you are including your spouse and/or your children in the application, the amount of your expenses consequentially increases as the young ones will also need to go to school if they are over 5 years of age. Aside from the above-mentioned expenses, you will also need to factor in the cost of transportation even if you will live near the school.
With a student visa, if you work in the agricultural industry, you can work more than 40 hours per fortnight.
Working holiday visa
The Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) is a temporary visa for young people who want to travel/holiday and work in Australia for up to a year. It is a temporary visa that encourages cultural exchange and closer ties between Australia and eligible countries.
This visa allows you to:
- stay in Australia for up to 12 months
- work in Australia for up to six months with each employer
- study for up to four months
- leave and re-enter Australia any number of times while the visa is valid.
Working in Australia
If you hold a Working Holiday visa, the main purpose of your visit must be for an extended holiday. You can do any kind of work throughout your 12-month stay in Australia, however, all Working Holiday visa holders are limited to a maximum period of six months of work with any one employer. This limitation applies to all employers and all forms of work.
The ’employer’ is the business or organization for which you are working directly.
If you are referred by an agency or labour supplier to a business, you can work for six months for that business. The same agency or labour supplier can refer you to another business where you can work for another six months. You cannot stay in the same position with an employer for more than six months by using different employment agencies, business affiliates or sub-contracting arrangements.
The six-month work limitation applies to full-time, part-time, casual, shift, and voluntary work.
Volunteer work is subject to the six-month employment limitation. You can undertake volunteer work activities for an organisation or employer for up to six months.
Workplace-based training is considered to work. You can undertake workplace-based training with the same employer for up to six months.
Permission to work longer than six months with an employer is only granted in exceptional circumstances.
Extending your stay if you work in agriculture.
If you hold a temporary visa to work in agriculture, you might be able to apply for COVID 19 Pandemic Event Visa if you wish to continue working in agriculture for up to 12 months.
You don’t have to pay the visa application fee and you can apply for COVID 19 Pandemic Event Visa 90 days before your visa expires. In case you are holding the COVID-19 Pandemic Event Visa and it is about to expire, you might be eligible for another COVID 19 Pandemic Event Visa to stay and work in agriculture in Australia.
