The subclass 887 visa can be described as a subsequent visa that is used by all eligible persons that have previously lived and worked in certain Australian regions on a previous eligible Australian visa.
Skilled Regional visa (subclass 887) – Eligibility Requirement
All interested persons that intend to apply for the subclass 887 visa must meet the following requirements:
- Hold an eligible visa or have held an eligible visa that expired outside Australia during the COVID-19 concession period. The eligible visas include – 489, 495, 496, 475 or 487.
- Have lived for at least 2 years and worked full time for at least 1 year in a specified Australian region, unless COVID-19 concessions apply
- Have complied fully with the requirements and conditions of the eligible visa
- Satisfactory completion of all health requirements including chest x-ray, HIV test, and other relevant health tests
- Must have functional English language
- Meet the character requirements by showing good character.
- Must not be in debt to the Australian government
Skilled Regional visa (subclass 887) – Application process
The application process for the subclass 887 visa can be broken down into five different steps as explained below –
Step one – Gather all the necessary documentations
Step two – Applicant can be in or outside Australia at the time of application. Ordinarily, the application is carried out only for persons living in Australia.
Step three – Lodgement of the application online.
Step four – Department of Home Affairs reviews and processes the application.
Step five – Once the application is approved, the visa grant notice will be sent to the applicant including the visa grant number, commencement date of the visa as well as visa conditions where applicable. If the application is rejected, the applicant will also be notified with reasons for the refusal and also where there is a possibility of reconsidering the visa application, the applicant will be notified.
Covid-19 Concessions and 887 Visa application
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, concessions are now given for applications made outside Australia for persons who were affected by the COVID-19 border closure. Such applicants must show the following –
- 9 months full–time work in a specified regional area (or, if the Minister specifies a shorter period in a legislative instrument, that shorter period), and
- 18 months residence in a specified regional area (or, if the Minister specifies a shorter period in a legislative instrument, that shorter period).
For applicants living in Australia, they must show the following –
- 9 months full-time work in a specified regional area, and
- 2 years of residence in a specified regional area.

The Skilled Regional 887 is a permanent residence visa for skilled provisional visa holders who lived for at least 2 years and gained at least 12 months of employment experience in the specified regional area of Australia.
