Australia’s Race for Global Talent

Thanks to the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), the Australian Government’s international trade promotion and investment agency, more and more exciting new investments are happening between Australian and international businesses.

One example comes as ENGIE enters into a joint venture with Mitsui & Co. Ltd to build one of the world’s first industrial-scale renewable hydrogen plants in Australia. The $87 million Yuri project will be built in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It includes a 10-megawatt (MW) electrolyser to produce renewable hydrogen, an 18 MW solar PV system to power the electrolyser, and an 8 MW / 5 MWh lithium-ion battery.

Building the plant will commence in October 2022, with Australia’s largest electrolyser to be completed by early 2024.

Meanwhile, Australia-based Cale and Daughters, which owns multiple vegan brands, is working with Israeli plant-based food company Vgarden to build a new factory in Brisbane, Queensland.

‘We are extremely proud of the partnership we have forged with Cale and Daughters over the last two years,’ says Ilan Adut, the CEO of Vgarden Israel. ‘We share the same idealist values and a clear vision for the potential of delicious, nutritious foods.’ Vgarden is already a supplier to Woolworths in Australia.

The new Brisbane factory will employ fifty staff and is scheduled for completion in 2023.

Austrade has also reported that ‘Retirement technology provider Smart has set up in Australia to tap into the country’s US$2.8 trillion pension market. The company is opening its Australian headquarters in Melbourne, a city with an expansive fintech ecosystem. The move comes after Australia introduced the Retirement Income Covenant. The Covenant seeks to provide pension funds with greater flexibility in designing their retirement income strategies.’

Andrew Evans, the co-founder of Smart, said, ‘We’re really excited to bring our technology to bear in Australia, creating jobs and bringing further innovation to one of the most mature retirement ecosystems on the planet.’
