Australian universities, which attract students from around the world, have done well in the latest global rankings for higher education institutions.
The 2016 QS World University Rankings show that overall Australia has nine universities in the top 200, one more than last year, five of which are in the top 100.
The rankings, which began in 2004, consider more than 3,000 institutions worldwide. The annual rankings measure such factors as academic reputation, citation statistics, international mix and staff-student ratios.
Heading the list is the Australian National University (ANU) ranked at 22, followed by the University of Melbourne at 42, the University of Sydney at 46, the University of New South Wales at 49, the University of Queensland at 51 and Monash University at 65.
The University of Western Australia dropped out of the top 100, coming in at 102 and down from 98 last year and the University of Adelaide is ranked at 125. The University of Technology (UTS) in Sydney and the University of Wollongong made the biggest improvements, moving up to 193 and 218 respectively.
