Estimated processing times for partner visas
Below are the current estimated processing times for partner visas:
100 – Partner (Migrant) visa (subclass 100): 18 – 30 months
309 – Partner (Provisional) (subclass 309): 18-26 months
801 – Partner (subclass 801): 12-20 months
820 – Partner (subclass 820): 24- 31 months

4 Key Updates on Australian Partner Visas
1. Offshore partner visa applicants now granted onshore
As of 27 February 2021, offshore partner visas can now be granted onshore. Prior to this, Applicants who lodged their partner visa in their home country, had to also be in their home country at the time of the grant. Due to COVID-19 restricting travel, the Department has allowed for Applicants offshore partner visa to be granted while they are in Australia.
2. Higher intake of partner visas
With the increasing need and demand for partner visas, the Government has now increased the intake. Previously it was about 37,000 but now that has increased to over 70,000. This will allow many Australians to be reunited with their partners.
3. Higher English language requirement
The Government will soon increase the level of English language required for applicants of a partner visa. It is uncertain what level of English they will require but what is certain is that it will be higher. Although this has not come into effect yet, it is expected shortly. Any applicants who apply for their partner visa before this change will not be affected by it.
4. Pre-approval of Sponsorship
As of April 2021, partner visas will be a two-step process, 1: Sponsorship and part 2: visa application. In other words, the sponsors of a partner visa will need to submit their sponsorship application first and then once it is approved, the visa applicant will be able to submit their application for a partner visa. This is put in place to identify any will adverse information of the sponsor that may affect the visa application, giving applicants the opportunity to withdraw at an early stage if they wish to.
