Step 1: Research the correct Visas and Apply for a visa before moving to Queensland
Visa options
Migration Queensland nominates for a range of business and skilled visas, which are listed below. Note that some visas have several pathways of entry, called “streams”.
Business visas
Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa (Subclass 188)
This visa allows you to own and manage a business in Queensland, conduct business and investment activity in Queensland, or undertake an entrepreneurial activity in Queensland.

This visa allows you to own and manage a business in Australia, conduct business and investment activity in Australia or undertake an entrepreneurial activity in Australia
Skilled visas
Skilled Nominated (Permanent) visa (subclass 190)
This visa allows nominated skilled workers to live and work in Queensland as permanent residents.
With this visa, you can
- work and study anywhere in Australia
- sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence
- if eligible, become an Australian citizen
You must
- have an occupation on the relevant skilled list
- have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
- be invited to apply for this visa
- satisfy the points test
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)
This visa allows nominated skilled workers to live and work in regional Queensland.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa – Main applicant
- stay in Australia for 5 years
- live, work and study in a designated regional area of Australia
- travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid
- apply for permanent residence after 3 years from the time your visa is granted
You must
- be nominated to apply by a state or territory government agency, or an eligible relative must sponsor you
- have an occupation on a relevant skilled occupation list
- have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
- be invited to apply
- satisfy the points test
Step 2: Prepare to move to Queensland
These are the things you’ll need to do before moving in to ensure you have a smooth transition from one house to the other.
1. Set Up Or Transfer Utilities
You’ll either want to set up your utilities in your new home, or transfer them from your previous property. This includes water, gas and electricity. The sooner you can let your utility company know your move-in date, the better.
2. Update Your Address
Although it seems obvious (you are moving to a new address after all!), updating your address often gets forgotten during the pandemonium of moving into a new house. This includes changing your address on your driver’s licence, insurance, car registration, banks and credit cards, and even letting the electoral commission know that you’re moving into a new electorate.
3. Catalogue Valuable Items
If you’re using a moving company to relocate your possessions, photographing items of value it a good idea. This allows you to catalogue things quickly – you can even save the photos to your phone to ensure you have proof of your belongings’ condition if you need it.
4. Get Ready To Pack
It is good to start by packing off-season clothes and items you don’t use frequently. This will give you peace of mind and streamline the entire phase. You can pack room by room and use quality materials for delicate items, such as crockery, dishes, lamps, wall arts, etc.
You can use extra cushioning materials, such as, blankets, bubble wraps, towels, and other materials. Make sure you pack everything and label each box.
Hiring a good removals company for packing heavy furniture is also a great decision. Many companies offer packing services at the most reasonable price.
