The Department of Home Affairs (the Department) has released the results for the latest Skill Select invitation round.
These results are for the following points-based skilled visas:
- Subclass 189 Skilled – Independent visa; and
- Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Family Sponsored visa.

Australian Point-tested visas
- Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
A non-sponsored Skilled Permanent Visa in Australia. It means you do not require any sponsorship or job offer from Australia to apply for this particular visa. This point tested visa allows you and your spouse to live and work and study in Australia permanently.
- Skilled Work Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 491)
A Regional (provisional or temporary) visa for 5 years. You can also convert it into a PR visa later on. To apply for this visa, you need to nominate from a regional territory or sponsorship from Australia’s regional part.
Invitation rounds for Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)
The table below shows the number of invitations issued in the SkillSelect invitation round on 26 July 2021.

Invitation rounds for Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Family Sponsored visas, are anticipated to be run quarterly.
Dates for the rounds are subject to change.
Invitation numbers in each round may vary depending on the number of applications being processed by the Department.
Note: State or territory government nominations for Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) will not be impacted by the departmental invitation rounds.
Australian Occupation Ceiling
An ‘occupation ceiling’ may be applied to invitations issued under the independent, and skilled regional (provisional) visas. This means there will be a reasonable upper limit on how many EOIs can be invited for skilled migration from an occupation group.
This ensures that the skilled migration program remains balanced and continues to invite intending migrants across a variety of skilled occupations.
Skilled Migration Program
Occupation ceiling values are based on a percentage of stock employment figures for each occupation. Employment figures are provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and represent the number of people employed in Australia in each occupation.
Occupation ceilings do not apply to State or Territory Nominated or Business Innovation and Investment visa subclasses.
The Government is closely monitoring migration and visa settings to ensure they are consistent with public health measures, are flexible and do not displace job opportunities for Australians, so that Australia can effectively respond to the immediate and subsequent impacts of COVID-19. As such, targeted invitation rounds have occurred since May 2020.
The Department will run quarterly invitation rounds for the remainder of the 2021-22 program year.
