How do I find a rental property and how much will it cost?
In Australia, real estate agents manage properties (houses, apartments and units) on behalf of the owner. Each real estate agency will display a weekly updated list of available rental properties.
As prices of rental properties vary so greatly (based on quality and location) it is difficult to give a truly accurate amount that you will expect to pay to rent in Australia. Similar to most countries, you will to pay higher prices to live in the city or near the beach than in the country. In Brisbane, for example, it is approximately $250 per week for a two-bedroom property in the suburbs neighbouring the city. This price does not include costs for gas and electricity, and most properties are unfurnished.
Once you have found and inspected a property that you would like to live in, you will need to show the real estate agent evidence of your weekly income, as well as references from previous property managers and employers. You will also be required to pay a bond (usually four weeks rent) to ensure that you will take care of the property, as well as two weeks rent in advance.
