Good news for migrants!
The citizenship bill has been removed from the Senate today, after the Turnbull Government failed to meet a Senate imposed deadline yesterday. This means that from today onwards the laws for citizenship will revert back to the way they were before the April announcement, whereby permanent residence visa holders are eligible to apply for Australian citizenship after 12 months and there is no associated English test.
What does this mean for the Turnbull Government and their citizenship bill? It means they will have to take their bill back to the drawing board and make significant changes to it before restarting any negotiations about it.
