Rupert Murdoch calls for more immigration

Rupert Murdoch calls for more immigration.

The Australian-born media mogul Rupert Murdoch is celebrating immigration, calling for Australia to become ‘the world’s most diverse nation’ because of the ‘incredible political advantage’ this would bring.

He told his audience at a conference in Sydney hosted by the Lowy institute that ‘The 21st century is Australia’s for the taking’, stating Australia could become a major international power if it recognises the vital importance of immigration.

Mr Murdoch is an international migrant himself. He was born in Australia, made much of his fortune in the UK and now lives in the US.

Murdoch told his audience that immigration was the key to a prosperous future for Australia. He said that the story of Frank Lowy, founder of Westfield Shopping Centre group, was now ‘the story of Australia’. Mr Lowy travelled to Australia from Slovakia before setting up a deli delivery business.

He said that Australia was already outstripping the US as a nation of immigrants, which was ‘an incredible competitive advantage’.

He explained ‘A nation as small as ours will increasingly depend on trade. The more people we have with ties to other parts of the world, the greater our advantage when we seek trade relationships with these nations’.

Mr Murdoch also praised migrants for their drive and perseverance, stating: ‘What immigrant would leave family and history far behind for a life of idleness? People come here because they seek a better life for themselves and their children, and they believe in opportunity’.
